This pattern is a modern version of a pattern published in 1918 by Maud Churchill Nicoll in Knitting and Sewing: How to Make Useful Articles for Men in the Army and Navy. The pattern instructions were rewritten in modern terms so members of the Fort Vancouver Knitters Guild could knit hats for the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Costume Department.

The skull cap is very stretchy and fits most adult heads. The extra inch added to the body of size Large accommodates a head circumference greater than 23 inches. It is a very comfortable hat to wear because of 2 X 2 ribbing and the stockinette crown.

This is one of several World War I era patterns the Guild has rewritten in modern terms to contribute to the Fort’s Costume Department.
