Wybertjes hat
No longer available for purchase
This geometric harlequin pattern reminded me of Wybertjes, a Dutch diamond shaped licorice candy, that was very popular in the nineties. The little box they came in, had diamonds all over it, that is why I called this the Wybertjes hat :)
Materials:
•Rowan Alpaca colour in (yellow) Colour A
•Rowan Alpaca colour in (grey) Colour B
•Circular needle or a set of double pointed needles size 4mm/US6
•Tapestry needle to weave in the ends when finished
•Pompom maker 4,5cm/1.8inches (optional)
This yarn is very soft and warm, because it is 100% baby alpaca. It is a single ply yarn in DK-weight that slowly changes from a light to a dark shade within the same colour.
You’ll need about 40 grams/1.4 ounces of the yellow colour and 17 grams/0.6 ounces of the grey colour.
The hat is about 21cm/8.3 inches in length (without the pompom) and is suitable for a head circumference from 50cm/20 inches to 60cm/23.5 inches (fits most adults).
Gauge: 10x10cm (4x4in) = 25 stitches x 26 rows,
knitted in the round in stranded pattern, after blocking.
For the pompom I used a 4,5cm/1.8inches pompom maker. If you don’t have one, you can use a fork or two pieces of carbon paper to make a pompom. On YouTube are many tutorials on how to make a pompom.
The hat is knitted in the round from the bottom to the top. You can use a circular needle or a set of double pointed needles.
My preferred cast on method is the cable cast on, because it looks neat and is very elastic. If you don’t know how this cast on is done, you can find plenty of tutorials on Google and YouTube. Any other stretchy cast on will work just fine too.
