This is the “X-Stitch Neckwarmer” crochet pattern for a cozy, textured cowl you can pull up to keep your face warm or scrunch down for a slim profiled scarf. It looks lovely peeking up from your coat collar! It’s a great beginner pattern or a quick project for the experienced crocheter because of the complex-looking texture created using only basic stitches.

You should be familiar with chaining, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. Instructions are included for foundation half double crochet and a special joining/chaining technique that creates a more seamless looking join. The paid pdf also includes a photo tutorial for the special joining/chaining technique.

Yarn selection is key, as this cowl can be rustic with high texture contrast when you use a natural fiber yarn (hemp, wool, cotton) that has some stiffness to it, or luxurious and drapey if your yarn is soft and flexible. The photos show the neckwarmer in a wool yarn that stands on its own. Check out some of the other projects made from this pattern, which have photos of the finished project in various yarn textures.
