Hair ties, also known as scrunchies, are one of the most beginner-friendly crochet projects. This pattern includes two styles; the difference is the braiding in the middle section. Both styles have a twisted-cord edge instead of the common v-shape look.

In the video and photo tutorials, cotton yarn is used to make the hair tie because it’s easier to see how the
stitches are constructed.

The PDF is written in English, and it includes:

  • step-by-step pattern instructions
  • guiding images for each step
  • video tutorials for each hair tie style

For crochet beginners, this guide also provides access to video tutorials of basic crochet stitches and techniques.

Difficulty Level: Beginner

Yarn:
Size Medium 4 velvet yarn or soft cotton yarn are recommended.

  • You can use any yarn you would like.
  • You need approximately 12 yds of the yarn to make one piece.

Tools:

  • Crochet hook size: 4 MM (A 4 MM hook is a slightly smaller size than recommended on the yarn label. Feel free to alter the crochet hook sizes to your preference. The size and the density of the hair tie will vary based on the hook you use.)
  • Yarn needle: any size, as long as the yarn can go through the eye, and the needle can go through stitches
  • Scissors
  • Elastic

As a reference, when using a 4MM crochet hook with size medium 4 Bernat baby velvet yarn (gauge info on label: 5mm, 13 SC, 14 R), the hair tie sizes are:

  • Style 1: more textured, with extra braiding in the middle section; approx. 3.5” in diameter
  • Style 2: smoother, without extra braiding; approx. 3.25” in diameter
