Y-Chromosome Socks
When visiting my mother she presented me with four pairs of socks, knit by my later grandmother several decades ago. Obviously, I got very excited about this and decided to write out the patterns that my grandmother had used. This resulted in two different pairs of socks, mtDNA: a simple model with a decorative line, and Y-chromosome: a pair of men’s socks with a textural pattern (obviously also for women, but originally made for my uncle). The Y-chromosome socks are worked from the hem down with a basic decorative stitch pattern and are an easy pattern for those looking for a simple but interesting sock.
Size and finished measurements
The pattern is written for only one circumference: 20-23cm. If you would like to modify the circumference, use a stitch count that is a multiple of four. Length size can be easily adjusted to preference by adding or subtracting rows (in blocks of two).
Skills required
Working in the round (magic loop, DPN’s, tiny circular needle). Basic stitches and increases.
Gauge
10x10cm in pattern, 2.75mm needles: 27st x 52r
Materials
Two skeins of TukuWool Sock, or around 300m of thicker sock yarn. The sample is knit in the color Aava.
2.75mm needle or other, depending on gauge. Either a circular needle (at least 80cm/30” in length), DPN’s, or any other needles that you use to work in the round.
Three stitch markers, needle for weaving in ends.
