Ya Basic bed socks
Sometimes in life, you just need cosy feet. Sure, that may be “basic”, but basic can be a good thing. These bed socks are here to prove it; with straightforward, top-down construction, a simple heel flap, and cosy chunky yarn, they knit up super-fast to make sure your feet will be snuggled up in no time. And because they’re a little bit basic, they’re a perfect first-time sock for a sock knitting newbie.
While they can be knitted with a bit of negative ease to make them close-fitting, they work best when worn a bit big and slouchy. After all, there’s nothing in life more comforting than a nice cup of tea (or pumpkin spice latte) and a really good bed sock. If you’ve got snuggly feet, then somehow the world all seems a little bit better.
Key information
The Ya Basic bed socks are knitted top-down in the round. They can be knitted on circular needles using the magic loop method, or on DPNs depending on your preference. The pattern is written so that either can be used.
This pattern has the instructions for 3 sizes – small, medium, and large. Where numbers vary, instructions are written as “small (medium, large)”, so be sure you’re looking at the correct number for the size you’re knitting. The sizes are fairly generous fitting to help you get that slouchy, snuggly fit.
Suggested yarn: 100g (150g, 200g) / 100m (150m, 175m) of chunky weight yarn. Sample is knitted in Malabrigo Chunky (95m to 100g), but most chunky yarns will work. I’ve also used Paintbox Wool Mix Chunky to knit a pair (100m to 100g).
Suggested needles (and notions): 8mm (US 11) needles (or size needed to match gauge) – long circular for magic loop or set of double pointed, 2 stitch markers, optional sock blockers.
Gauge: 13st and 18 rows to 10cm (4in) square, measured over stocking stitch in the round
Finished size: Diameter of 9.5 (11, 12.5)cm 3.75 (4.5, 5)in after blocking. These socks are designed to be worn with 0-2.5cm (0-1in) of positive ease, so if you want a closer fit then size down.
