About the pattern
Yarnesty’s mittens are knitted from the top down starting with the thumb rib. After that, you cast on the hand rib, and knit the hand part. The two parts are joined together, and the lifeline gusset is created. This version of a gusset is one I like, as it fits very well on my hands. After the gusset is finished, a cuff in 1x1 rib is knitted. After the cuff has been bound off, the stitches between the thumb and the hand are grafted together.
Gauge
22 sts and 32 rnds = 10x10 cm i stockning stitch after blocking
Yarn and metreage
Or one thread each by the following yarns held together:
Rauma Finull, 100% wool, 175 metres / 50 g
Rauma Plum, 70% super kid mohair, 30% polyamide 250 metres/25 g
Or Rauma Fivel 100% wool, 100 metres / 50 g
Calculated meterage for half mittens with a shorter wrist cuff:
50 (55) 60 (65) 70 metres Rauma Plum and 50 (55) 60 (65) 70 metres Rauma Finull
Or 50 (55) 60 (65) 70 metres Rauma Fivel
If you want to knit the longer wrist cuff, you’ll need approx. 10 metres extra per yarn.
Needles and notions
3 stitch markers
2 unique Beginning of round markers
3 locking markers
Darning needle
Extra needles, scrap yarn, flox or cords to put the thumb sts on hold.
Needles for small circumference knitting, in a size to obtain gauge. For example circulars with length at least 80cm, double pointed needles, small 23 cm circular or CrazyTrios/FlexiFlops.
When the sample was knitted, gauge was obtained on needles 4.0 mm.
Note that I am a tight knitter. You might need to go down a needle size or two, to 2.5-3.75mm needles.
