Year of the Snake-snake
Hello and welcome to 2025! Am I late? Yes. Do I care? Sort of yes. Juggling a baby, work, chores and trying to maintain a social life and also fitting in some me-time is a true challenge, hence the lack of patterns in the past year. I wish I could say 2025 will be better, but with daycare not starting until summer, and us moving into our own house this year, I really don’t think I will be able to return to semi-regular patterns. Maybe One per quarter year is a decent goal? We will see.
But I just had to make a snake for the new lunar year! I am honestly not a fan of snakes so it was quite challenging to create something that I actually liked, but I think I did a pretty decent job. Figuring out how to make all the curves drove me insane, but here we are! I hope your year will be full of good things and that this little snake will be one of them!
Note that this is a slightly advanced pattern that makes use of short rows to curve the body – this isn’t terribly difficult, just a headsup.
Materials
To make the snake you will need:
– A 2.5mm crochet hook
– Yarn in your color of choice for the snake and the leaves
– A tapestry needle and scissors
– Stuffing
– Safety eyes or black embroidery thread for the eyes
– A stitch marker to help you keep track of the start of the round
– CRAFT WIRE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! The snake is top-heavy and prone to toppling over if not supported properly. I did not have craft wire and had to stick a firm unbendable metal wire down the head and into the body. Adding something heavy to the body can also help keep the snake upright.
Please note that you can make the snake using any size crochet hook and yarn weight for a smaller or bigger result. Using DK yarn and a 2.5mm crochet hook, the snake should be about 15cm tall.
Stitches & Abbreviations
The pattern is written using US crochet terms in continuous spirals with the addition of some short rows. You will need to know the following kinds of stitches to make him:
– Magic Ring (MR)
– Single crochet (sc)
– Decrease (dec); preferably using the invisible decrease method
– Increase (inc)
– Chaining (ch)
