Yesnaby is an area in Sandwick, on the west coast of the mainland of Orkney, Scotland, south of Skara Bre. It is renowned for its spectacular coastal cliff scenery. I have never been there, but the contour of the cliffs, their shapes and outlines merged in my imagination with magical Shetland lace. So this shawl was made: large, warm, comfortable. It will protect you against gusts of an icy wind and keep you warm during the cold season.

Yesnaby is a square-shaped shawl made in Shetland lace technique.
It’s worked in 3 stages:
First, the central panel is worked flat; the top edge is left open.
When the square is complete, stitches along all 4 sides of the square are picked up and knitted, and the border is worked in the round.
Third: the edging is worked and joined perpendicularly around the entire shawl.

Yarn: I recommend using fine wool yarn approximately 1000 - 1500 meters per 100 g.

Yardage depends on the desired finished size of the shawl. It’s better to have up to 2800 - 3000 m.

Difficulty level: intermediate. You have to be able to read knitting charts, work garter stitch and lace pattern in RS and WR rows, cast on sts with waste yarn; pick up sts along vertical edges; graft live sts.

Gauge: may vary depending on the yarn weight, needle size, and your knitting tension.

Recommended Yarn: 1000 - 1500 m per 100 g.
For this project, I used Knoll Yarns Lambswool (425 m / 50 g).
Finished size of my shawl (after blocking): 177 cm х 177 cm; weight - 256 g.
Yardage - 2500 meters.

If you use one strand of 1400-1500 m/100 g yarn, weight and yardage will be twice as less, as well as the shawl size..

Needles and notions: circular knitting needles 2.5 mm - 3.0 mm, stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking pins.
If you tend to knit loosely, I suggest using smaller size needles - about 2.0 mm - 2.5 mm

Markers: I prefer to use removable markers and place them directly on the stitch, not on the needle between stitches. Of course, you are welcome to use any method of marking your stitches, just keep this note in mind while reading the following instructions.
