Yon Tartan
Yon Tartan is a rectangular shawl knit in 4 different colors. The shawl has a garter stitch border, and the body is worked in stockinette ribbing, while the vertical lines are added afterwards to the purl “ditches” left behind by the ribbing using a crochet hook with a simple technique sometimes called Faux Plaid Knitting. It is knit from the bottom up. I named this shawl Yon Tartan since “yon” means “that” in Scottish, and tartan is well known to be a fabric which has multiple blocks of colors crisscrossing vertically and horizontally. Basically, you will be creating “yon” tartan by the colors you choose! I knit this in sport weight yarn, but this pattern will work just as well for fingering through worsted weight. My finished shawl using 320 stitches ended up being a generous 7 feet in length, and 17 ½ inches in width once blocked. I used about 700 yards total divided over 4 different colors to make the shawl. Complete written directions, tips, and video technique links are included in this pattern. This is a great stash busting project!
