I designed these socks to highlight the first yarn I dyed myself. I wanted a stretchy texture, so that I could use the pattern to make socks for our whole family; but nothing too complicated, so that the hand dyed colours would get a chance to shine.

These socks are simple, knit from the top down, with a slip stitch heel. These socks are knit on DK yarn and US 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs, so they knit up fast. The texture of the “mistake ribbing” is very stretchy, so the socks stretch to accommodate most feet. The texture is created using a combination of just knits and purls. You can use the written instructions or the chart. The samples were knit using 2 skeins/pair of Patons Classic Wool DK Superwash that were dyed by me and my family, using Ciba acid dyes.

As I was knitting these socks, I realized I was making them on the needles that my grandma taught me to knit on, so I named them after her.

I also made a pair for my young son simply by sizing down to US 4 (3.5 mm) needles. Details for that project, including gauge and the lengths of each component are included in the pattern.
