Zolotaya Hat
Zolotaya hat is a slouchy cabled beanie with a minimalistic I-cord brim. It is a lightweight hat yet it will keep you cosy and warm. The cable pattern is easy to memorise and it will be definitely a perfect project to bring along wherever you go.
I recommend a sport weight (non-superwash, woollen spun if possible) yarn or a combination of lace and fingering yarn if you’d like to work with mohair. Please note that mohair can overpower the cable pattern due to its fuzz.

YARN
You need 2 (2, 2) skeins of Ulysse from DeRerum Natura (185 m/50 g; woolen spun, French mérinos d’Arles and black Portuguese merino) or approx. 240 (255, 275, 285) m/ 260 (280, 300, 310) yds of a similar yarn.
The sample is knitted with Ulysse from DeRerum Natura in the colourway Genet.
Note: Please be aware that adjusting the length of the garment or the needle size you need to achieve the stated gauge will also affect the amount of yarn needed to finish the project.
NEEDLES
Size XS and L: 3.25 mm / US 3 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
Size S only: 3.5 mm / US 4 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
Size M only: 3 mm / US 2.5 needle tips on a circular cable needle.
You will need a cable of at least 40 cm / 15 inch length to work the body of the hat and for the crown shaping either a longer cable for magic looping, or DPNs in the same size.
Optional: One size bigger needle tips for the I-cord brim.
GAUGE
Sizes XS and L: 26 sts and 40 rows = 10 cm / 4 inch over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
Size S only: 25 sts and 38 rows = 10 cm / 4 inch over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
Size M only: 27 sts and 42 rows = 10 cm / 4 inch over cable pattern (chart A and B), after washing and blocking
The directions for knitting the swatch are included in the pattern.
Please, also note that the cable pattern is quite stretchy so you can get a different gauge based on how much you stretch your swatch. It is important to get no more than 26 (25, 27, 26) stitches per repeat when you stretch it as much as you can. This way you can be sure the hat will fit because you will be able to stretch it to the measurements. I recommend stretching it to the point where you like how the cables look and then measuring the stitch count.
