Zonky Shawl
I am so lucky to get to work with one of my most favorite groups of yarn ladies again, Blue Mule Fiber. This collaboration is a one-skein-wonder. I loved the name of their yarn so much that I could not think of a better name for this pattern. This unique yarn has sections that contain black wound together with the other colors used which gives it a striped look. I knew I had to create a piece that showed off this fun yarn.
We all have that one skein that just grabs us. So here is a pattern that uses that special skein. This shawl has a herringbone border that holds a beautiful lace interior. The tassel was added as a finishing touch that is optional.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Length without tassel: about 17 in/43.2 cm
Width: about 59 inches (almost 5 ft)/150 cm
MATERIALS
Yarn: Blue Mule Fiber, Zonky, Finger/Sock Weight, 100 gm, 100% Superwash Merino 21 Micron, Approx 437 yds.
Color: Texas Ranger, whole skein used.
(Yardage needed includes tassel).
NEEDLES
Size US 10 (6.00 mm) 48 inch (or longest) circular needle.
Tapestry needle and 2 stitch markers.
GAUGE
34 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches (10cm) in herringbone pattern.
(I did not check the gauge for the lace interior. It is not necessary to have correct gauge with this shawl. Just use most of the skein leaving some to bind off and possible add a tassel.)
NOTE
This shawl is worked flat and from bottom to top. The bottom starts with herringbone for several rows with the increases on both the knit and purl sides of the work. Once the piece is about 4 inches wide, stitch markers are added to separate the herringbone borders (18 sts each) from the inner lace area. The increases will continue to be only on the purl side in the herringbone border for the remainder of the pattern.
Instructions for herringbone and lace are given first separately and then the instructions to put them together follows.
