This pattern is for chunky “bubble writing” letters which can be propped on a shelf or mantelpiece, or threaded with a ribbon or string to hang them up. A lovely baby gift, wedding sign, home decoration or party banner.

Each letter is composed of an identical front and back, which are then sewn together around the edges and stuffed to form a delightfully squishy, tactile “bubble” letter.

Some letters are simpler than others, but once you get the idea of how the patterns work you can usually get one side knitted during an hour’s TV show!

Customise it!
This is a highly customisable pattern. Make your letters huge by knitting them in super-bulky yarn, or tiny in lace weight. Vary the colours and patterns, use different stitches – the possibilities are endless!

You could knit tiny, lace-weight flat letters (i.e. just one side) and applique to a jumper or stick in a frame for the wall.

Or knit them in super-chunky/bulky yarn and make them into pillows!

This pattern comprises all 26 letters of the alphabet plus 3 bonus patterns: ampersand (&), exclamation mark (!) and heart

Gauge, needle size etc.
The information provided is for knitting these in DK wool as I have, but these letters can be knitted in any yarn. I simply suggest that you go down a needle size or two from that recommended for your yarn, to create a nice dense fabric and stop the stuffing showing through.

Amount of yarn
Each letter only uses a few grams of yarn. As a guide, I used between 12g (30yds) and 23g (60yds) of DK wool for two sides of one letter (less for acrylic, more for cotton, less for thinner yarn, more for thicker). For the whole alphabet plus 3 symbols, you would need around 525g (1,300 yds) but obviously this could vary wildly depending on your yarn, gauge etc.

You will also need around 13-24g wool toy stuffing per letter (about half this if you use polyester stuffing, as it’s a lot lighter).

Fingering: 8cm / 3.25”
Sport: 10cm / 4”
DK: 14cm / 5.25”
Worsted: 19cm / 7.5”
Super chunky: 34cm / 13.5”
