This “Learn to Knit” series was designed by an elementary teacher. Each successive facecloth pattern in the series builds on previous skills in the tiniest increments, making the daunting challenge of learning how to knit accessible. While it is best to pair this guide with the hands-on advice of a knitting shop or friendly neighbourhood knitter, each skill has multiple links to YouTube videos so that you can learn on your own or review lessons when your guide isn’t available.
If you’ve ever tried to teach someone to knit and been at a loss for where to start or where to go next, this series removes that mental puzzle and allows you to focus on what you do best: knit. You can share this guide with your learner so they can access the tutorial links to practice when you aren’t available.
Welcome to the world of knitting! Humans have been knitting for over a thousand years and it’s a technique that’s found in cultures around the world. Knitwear is functional and beautiful, an expression of self, a part of the slow-fashion movement, and an opportunity to slow down from the busy modern world. It’s my favourite form of art, a necessary part of my self care, and my community. It’s great to have you be a part of it.
Learn to Knit (Set 1): Knit and Purl Patterns is currently available on Ash Thorne’s website, Splatterdash Art. The pdf has clickable links to all the videos and internal bookmarks for navigation. Each pattern is seperatated from its introduction and skills and terms sections, and the patterns are formatted to fit on one page, so individual patterns can be printed easily.
