The instructions are written for Worsted Weight yarn and that’s what we used for our cover models but, if that’s not handy, use Sport Weight - doubled, or even Rug yarn!
Gauge doesn’t matter that much; your potholder can certainly be a little bigger, or smaller, without changing the overall effect.
