Welcome to the garden! This edition of Little Knits is a knitted romp through our Autumn garden in the northern forests. Each piece is inspired by plants and elements of garden structures, and planting.
First is the Thistledown Pullover, named for the tiny lace raglan details that create the form of little seed heads from a downy thistle plant. This garment is worked top-down, in the round, with basic and complex shaping. It features twisted ribbing edges, and finishes with a peter-pan collar.
Next is the Aster Bonnet, named for the Aster plant, a tiny perennial daisy that blooms in the fall. You can see their likeness in the little lace florets that frame the face of the wearer. This bonnet is worked flat, then joined in the round to work the crown decreases. Last, an i-cord is worked to finish it.
Then comes the Arbor Waistcoat, inspired by a garden arbor or trellis. This piece features a simple stockinette body with a panel of cables climbing the back of the vest. Little lateral braids and applied pockets give it areas of interest among the simple flat knitting. It is worked bottom up and seamed at the shoulder.
Next is the Furrows Cowl, named for the carefully tilled rows in which a seed or seedling is planted in the garden. This simple stranded colorwork cowl is worked in the round and features i-cord edges. Only two colors are in play at a time throughout the cowl.
Last are the Chamomile Tea Socks, inspired by my favorite tea flowers, harvested and dry by now, and ready to steep in the cozy cool days ahead. You can see the simple lace daisy blooms that circle the ankle. The sock is worked top down, and features a German short row heel.
We hope you enjoy knitting your way through our garden, and wish you the cosiest of Autumns.
