Maritime and knitting traditions of the North go hand in hand. What better way to showcase this long-existing connection than knitting colorwork mittens in the Norwegian style of ‘Selbuvotter’, graced with themes of seafaring symbolism: swallows in flight, knotwork and wanderlust?
The Norwegian name, ‘Nordsjøen’, means The North Sea and holds the stories of a rich confluence of oceangoing cultures, from Vikings to yachters of the modern age.
Here are three salty mitten designs, interrelated yet unique, each with their own sequence of meaningful elements
This gorgeous 12-page e-book comes with comprehensive written instructions and beautiful chart lay-outs for both right and left hand motifs and shares the lore behind each mitten’s elemental story.
