Here are some scarf patterns from scarves I’ve knit for the store. I designed a lot of these with beginning knitters in mind to help folks learn new techniques and skills. One of the things I always try to do in my classes is to get students to add their own touch to a pattern, to learn to adjust patterns to suit themselves. I hope to do that with this book of patterns too. There are 15 patterns in the book.
Many of the patterns are easily changed if you want a wider or narrower scarf. For some you can merely use a larger or smaller yarn and needle size. You can also count the stitches used in a pattern repeat and add more stitches – say a pattern stitch uses 6 stitches and you want a wider scarf – add 6 or 12 stitches to the cast on. Most patterns have a small border of 3 or 4 knit stitches – this can also be made larger if you want wider edging.
Yarn requirements are approximate and, again, will vary depending on how you knit and size yarn you are using. Several patterns are given for different sizes of yarn. Fingering weight yarn requires about 400 - 450 yds for an average scarf, Sport or DK weight require 350 or so. Worsted – 200-250, Chunky - about 150 – 180. This will vary some. For instance, if the scarf is a lacy pattern, it will require less yarn. It is always wise to purchase a little extra yarn for your project.
