The Lofoten Collection is a mini-collection of three hat patterns inspired by the awe-inspiring islands of Arctic Norway: Lichen It, Sea
Slab, and Nordlys.
The Lichen It hat is inspired by the magnificent lichen and moss-covered granite slabs that rise from the ocean on the superlative arctic islands of Lofoten, Norway. The texture is created by a twisted, modified moss stitch dubbed the “lichen stitch”. Instructions are provided for sizes Adult S and L.
The Sea Slab Hat is inspired by the magnificent moss-covered granite slabs that rise from the ocean on the glorious arctic islands of Lofoten, Norway. The swirling pattern is made with a simple repeating slipped stitch pattern. The decreases are hidden, so the swirl continues unbroken to the crown of the hat. Directions are provided for sizes Adult S for single color; M for two color. To make a smaller or larger hat, it’s recommended that you choose needles and yarn that decrease or increase your gauge.
The Nordlys hat was inspired by the incredible green light show that rises in the arctic sky during the dark winter. (Nordlys is the Norwegian word for the northern lights or aurora borealis.) The stitch pattern along the bottom is a slipped stitch rib that continues into a slipped stockinette stich pattern. The floats from the slipped stitch create a little extra thickness around the ears where you want it, and the stockinette crown gives a little more softness and slouchiness. For a bolder show, knit the hat with two colors. The monochrome hat has a subtler but still striking array of rising stitches. Instructions are provided for sizes child, Adult S/M, and Adult L/XL
All three hats were knitted using worsted weight yarn and (primarily) size US 7 (4.5 mm) needles.
