Notes

This cardigan was based on colorwork patterns generated by a neural network trained on old knitting punchcard patterns. The model was built by one of my colleagues. The patterns generated by the algorithm were all over the place from symmetric and very geometric to pretty amorphous. I tried to pick several from each end of the spectrum.

11-14-2019

Changed the yarn. Changed the pattern. Cast on this thing. I’m pretty excited to get going!

12-26-2019

Gauge:

Knit flat: 4” = 37.5 st, 42 rows

11 edge stitches in stockinette on both sides.
Cast on 400 st.
Knit 67 rows in k3, p1 ribbing. Create pockets with your favorite method.

Row 68: Begin color work. Increase to 404 st (16 repeats @ 24 st/repeat, edge repeats are one stitch fewer) + 11 edge stitches on each side. Knit two repeats of color work pattern (51 rows, each). End on row 169. This should be ~ 16 inches. Then split for sleeves.

01-18-2020

On row 169, split for sleeves. Will have 3 panels with following stitch counts: 92 st, 220 st, 92 st (total = 404 st), excluding front garter stitch panels.

Knit ~10” or ~102 rows (2 full patterns). Stop around row 271.

01-30-2020

Finished front today. Skipped two rows at the start, so ended on row 165. Also forgot to switch patterns halfway through, so there is less visual interest,

Start other front panel.

03-02-2020

Back was completed using two different patterns, but knit as a simple rectangle. Then used Kitchener stitch to graft the fronts to the back, started at the shoulder edge, working towards the neck. I did not graft the garter border. I plan to fold that under before knitting on a collar.

Need to pick up stitches for sleeves. 84st will make ~9”, so will need 84st on the front and 84st on the back of the sleeve.

03-05-2020

Actually picked up 150 stitches for each sleeve. That will be 3 st on each side of 6 repeats of a new pattern. TBD.

Will need to reduce to 8.5” (80st) by the wrist. Sleeve length will be 16”(168rows). Need to reduce 70st over at most 160rows. Will reduce 2st every 4th row. This will take 140 rows to get to 80st.

03-10-2020

Ugh. Sleeve was puckering because I ignored the swatch! So I ripped back 15 rows of colorwork on BART.

Picked up 166 st (5 for every 6). This is 2 fewer than the swatch says I should. Crossing my fingers that will work. Knit 11st, 6 repeats, and 11st again.

Reduce 2 st every 4th row for 160 rows to get to 86st. Then knit straight for a total of 19”(170 rows). Think about cuff then.

03-29-2020

Knit 1 row with light grey (86st). On row 2 of cuff, knit3,purl1. Reduce 2 stitches somewhere to reduce to 84st. Knit 9 rows total. Cast off with tubular castoff.

04-11-2020

After both sleeves done, pick up stitches for the collar. Pick up 5 for every 6 along fronts and 1 for 1 along the back of the neck. Knit in k3p1 ribbing, using short rows of your choice to increase around the back of the neck. I have no idea what I actually want this collar to look like, so there will be some experimentation.
