Fondant = 9 g.
BRAIDED JOIN
This is not a pattern for a braided join, it is a simple guide to describe how I spaced my stitches and joined my squares together.
Start in the second of the three dc stitches in the corner and count along to the fourth st, dc in the fourth st (chainless start), ch 4, * dc in the next fourth st, ch 4, * continue to repeat from * to * until you reach a corner. Repeat the sides after each corner.
In a corner, dc in the second of the 3 dc, ch 5, dc in the same corner st, ch 4. After the final corner join with an invisible join.
When joining the braid together, after a dc, ch 2 of the 4 or 5 ch, remove the hook and insert it from front to back through the corresponding 4 or 5 ch loop on the other square, slide the working stitch back onto the hook and cont to braid along.
When joining a square to the corner of three others which have already been joined together, after the dc in the corner of the fourth square, ch 2 of the 5 ch, remove the hook and insert it from front to back into the corner loops of both the second and third squares, in that order, slide the working stitch back onto the hook and cont to braid along.

Square 1 (top left), square 3 (top right) joined to square 1

Square 2 (bottom left) joined to square 1, square 4 (bottom right) joined to squares 3 then 2 but at corner join to squares 2 and 3 in that order

GRANNY BORDER
A base is required before the granny border can be added.
Begin with a slip knot on your hook, use a chainless start, start on the side of a square before the corner of the blanket, (dc in ch 4 sp, ch 3), rep along the side of the same square and all other squares. In the four corners of the blanket, (dc in the ch 5 loop, ch 3). On the sides of the blanket where two squares meet each other, (dc decrease across the two ch 5 loops, ch 3).
Now you are ready to granny stitch your way around the blanket ie (3 tr in each ch space, ch 1) except blanket corners. For the first round, 3 tr into both the ch space and the first half of the 5 ch loop below, ch 2, 3 tr into both the next ch space and the second half of the 5 ch loop below. On subsequent rounds remember to ch 2 in the blanket corners and to turn the work on alternative rounds so that the granny border does not begin to spiral out of alignment.
BORDER EDGE
Round 1 – (Dc in ch 1 sp, 3 ch), along each side of the blanket, 3 dc in 2 ch sp at blanket corners.
Round 2 – (Dc spike in each tr below the ch 3 sp, ch 1) along each side of the blanket, 3 dc in the second dc at the blanket corners, ch 1.
Round 3 – (Tr, ch 1, tr, ch 1, tr) in each ch sp along each side of the blanket, (tr, ch 1, tr) in the second dc at the blanket corners.
