Final Update
Complete! I started to get the hang of how to use the cable needle - I preferred the u-shaped one and it worked great for me. I’m surprised at how good this looks now that it’s done. You can see where I struggled in the beginning at the bottom, but it really came together in the second half of the piece.
This would make a great scarf.

Update 1
This is the first 22 rows of the pattern. I’m using the chart version of the instructions. It’s very rough in the beginning. I was trying to use a small dpn for a cable needle but that was traumatic!
I popped by Hobby Lobby to pick up cable needles. I got both the straight style and the u style. The u style is working great, and it’s much easier to do the cabling.
This was a tough pattern to choose as a first for cables because it has twists as well, where you are purling off the cable needle too. On the other hand, a plain old cable will seem easy after this!
This is a very pretty pattern.
