This ball was done in the previous week before I joined in live, I watched the three streams where she was working on this ball a few times while doing temari related things, but I learned the most when following along. Some things that I had learned on my course before and came back through Dana’s instructions, some new.
- on the outside points of the kiku, cross where it naturally crosses the guideline. If the thread is not straight but bends inwards it’s too close.
Followed Dana’s youtube video on C8 marking. It’s not absolutely perfect but I’m happy with it.
I found out rather late that the power wrapping layer is showing in a few places. Probably a good idea to have more contrast on the power wrapping layer next time.
Guidelines in Durable black.
I started the kiku with purple but my points were still not straight. I also doubted the color order, so I sketched in procreate and decided to pull out the purple (I had let the ends hang out so it was easy enough) and start with the pinks instead.

Finished!
Worked on it during the stream last night and again while waiting for the Formula 1 race to start.
A few of the lessons learned, through Dana’s streams and while working
- ’flip the thread’, when you come to the point where you started, push the thread under the first leg before stitching it to make sure all points are crossing the same way.
- make sure the power wrapping contrasts with the outer layer - I found out after I’d put the guidelines on and I was stitching outside that he power wrapped layer wasn’t completely covered everywhere. I missed this inside with less light. It’s not a huge problem exactly because there isn’t much contrast but still not what you want.
- some threads (in this case the lighter purple) fuzz easily when worked on for a while. Don’t use too long threads and don’t let it hang on the ball to continue with later.
Overall I’m quite happy with this one, there weren’t any huge problems with the C8 division, it’s not perfectly even everywhere but it’s close enough not to be noticeable.
