10/31/2015 update: Decided on a flat braid join. I don’t think I’ll ever so this again. It was great fun making the blocks, but absolutely miserable joining the blocks because they all have different numbers of stitches, a challenge lining up the flat braid stitches. I ended up using a bunch of stitch markers to indicate which stitches to use.
Flat Braid Join: Sides SC, CH3, SC, corners SC, CH3, SC.
Joining: SC, CH2, drop yarn, insert in opposite block CH3 SP front-to-back, pick up yarn loop, pull loop through, CH1, SC in next ST back in block being attached.
