Notes

This is not a pattern….just my notes. The notes should be adequate for you to make your own if you have some crochet experience. :)

US Terms;

Head
Using 2 strands of 8ply white and 5.5mm hook;
8sc in a magic ring,
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea st around.
Rnd 2: (1sc, 2sc in next st) around.
Rnd 3: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc in next) around.
Rnd 4: (1sc in first 3 sts, 2sc in next) around.
Rnd 5: (1sc in first 4sts, 2sc in next) around.
Rnds 6-13: sc around.
Rnd 14: (1sc in first 4sts, 2sc tog) around.
Rnd 15: (1sc in first 3 sts, 2sc tog) around.
Rnd 16: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc tog) around.
Rnd 17: (1sc in first st, 2sc tog) around.
Rnd 18: 2sc tog around, finish off.

Ears (Make 2)
Outer ear;
Using 2 strands of white and 5.5mm hook;
4sc in a magic ring - pull up magic ring to close the circle. (do not join circle - you want a semi-circular shape)
Row 1: Ch 1, turn and work 2sc in each st.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn and work 1sc in each st.
Row 3: Work 1row in reverse single crochet, finish off.

Inner Ear;
Using 1 strand of light blue and 3.5mm hook and follow the same pattern as the outer ear pieces - finish after Row 2.
Stitch blue inner ears into front side of your outer ear pieces, then sew ears to head.

Eyes (make 2)
Using 1 strand of black and 3.5mm hook;
6dc in a magic ring.
Pull up the ring to close but do not join the end to the starting sc to form a circle…..if you pull up the centre without joining the circle, you will end up with a semi-circular shape. Place one small white stitch somewhere on the eye (same place on both eyes) before stitching to the head.

Moustache
Using 1 strand of light blue and 3.5mm hook;
4sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: (1sc in first st, 2sc in the next st) around.
Rnd 2: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc in next st) around.
Rnds 3-5: s around.
Rnd 6: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc tog) around.
Lightly stuff at this point.
Rnd 7: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc in next st) around.
Rnds 8-10: sc around.
Rnd 11: (1sc in first 2 sts, 2sc tog) around.
Lightly stuff to match the first half of the moustache.
Rnd 12: (1sc in first st, 2sc tog) around, finish off and weave tail through to close the end hole.
Flatten the shape - I took a small scrap of the blue yarn and pulled in the middle section of the piece until it looked like a peanut shape. Stitch to the face.

Nose
Using grey and 3.5mm hook;
6hdc in a magic ring, do not join circle, finish off and sew to face above moustache.

Mouth
Using 1 strand of white and 3.5mm hook;
4sc in a magic ring, do not join circle, finish off and sew to face below moustache.

Body
Using 2 strands of royal blue and 5.5mm hook;
6 sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each st around.
Rnd 2: (sc 1, 2 sc in next st) round.
Rnd 3: (sc 2, 2 sc in next st) around.
Rnd 4: (sc 3, 2 sc in next st) around.
Rnds 5-7: sc around.
Rnd 8: (1sc in first 3sts, 2sc tog) around.
Rnd 9: (1sc in first 2sts, 2sc tog) around.
Rnds 10-14: sc around, finish off.

Sew head and body together.

Blue Collar
Using single strand of blue and 3.5mm hook;
I worked a row of foundation single crochet (fdsc) - make it long enough to sit around the neck. When it’s long enough, work 3ch and turn. Then work 4dc, 3hdc, then sc to the last 7 sts, work 3hdc then 4dc. Ch1, turn and work 1sc in ea st to end. Finish off and sew around neck above the arms - so make sure that you’ve sewn them on first.
Work 3 ‘v’ stitches with black embroidery thread of each side of the collar as seen in pics of ‘Capt Barnacles’.

Boot/Legs
(Make 2)
Boot;
Using medium blue and 3.5mm hook;
Ch 5.
Rnd 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each of next 2ch, 3sc in last ch. Now turn your work so that you are working back up along the base of your beginning chains, 1 sc in each of next 2ch, 2sc in last ch. Join with sl st to first sc. (10)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2sc in first sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc, 2 sc in each of next 3sc, 1sc in each of next 2sc, 2sc in each of last 2sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (16)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2sc in first sc, 1sc in each of next 4 sc, 2sc in each of next 4sc, 1sc in each of next 4sc, 2sc in each of next 3sc. Join with sl st to first sc. (24)
OPTIONAL - If you wish to put soles into your boots - trace the shape of your crochet piece onto some firm plastic (I used an ice-cream container) and cut two soles - slightly smaller than your piece of crochet and set aside. I think that a sole gives a better finished look and shape to the boot.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, Working in back loops only, 1sc in
each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. (24)
Rd 5: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 7 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to end of rnd. Join with sl st to first sc. (21)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 6 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog. Join with sl st to first sc. (17)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, 1sc in each of next 5 sc, sc2tog x 3, 1sc in each sc to end of rnd. Join with sl st to first sc. (14)
Rnds 8-10: Ch 1, 1sc in each st around. Join with sl st to first sc. (14)
Insert soles if you wish before continuing.
Change to royal blue. (Colour change will be covered by the boot cuff, so don’t worry about neatness here).
Rnd 11: Ch1, 1sc in ea st around - do not join your row here…..continue on from here in Amigurumi style (continuous rounds of 1sc in ea st) and work 8 more rounds of sc, finish off and stuff.
Boot cuff;
Using medium blue and 3.5mm hook;
Fdsc 17, finish off and sew around leg where boot and leg join - position the boot cuff so that your starting chain is to the top of the boot. (It is far easier to sew the boot cuffs to the legs before you sew the legs to the body!)
Sew legs to the body.

Hands/Arms
Arms (make 2).
Using single strand of white and 3.5mm hook;
5sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each sc around. (10sts)
Rnd 2: 1 sc in each sc around. (10sts)
Rnd 3: 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 1 puff stitch in the next sc (forming the thumb - this puff stitch is made by; inserting your hook into stitch and drawing up a loop, yarn over, then repeat a further 3 times in the same stitch, then pull the final yarn over through all loops on the hook - finish off with 1ch to secure your ‘puff’), 1 sc in each of last 5 sc.
Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st around. (11sts)
Rnd 5: Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. (9 sts)
Rnd 6: Sc2tog, 1 sc in each st around. (8sts)
Change to royal blue
Rnd 7-18: Sc in each st around, finish off.

Once his arms are attached you can now sew on his collar. I then used a scrap of grey yarn to sew 5 chain sts down from the collar to form his ‘zip’.

Belt
Work a row of fdsc in the medium blue - I did 35sts….you may need to add stitches or work less stitches depending on how much stuffing your captain has. Work your row and test it’s size around his belly region, ch1, turn and work 1sc in ea st to the end, finish off. Sew to body - his belt sits on an angle….it dips down on his right hand side as he has a little utility bag hanging from his belt on that side.

Utility Bag;
Using a single strand of a dark blue (I used a scrap I had handy) and 3.5mm hook;
Ch 6, turn and work 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch to the end, ch1, turn.
Rows 2-8: 1sc in ea sc to end, ch1, turn.
Row 9: 1sc in ea sc to end, finish off.
Fold rectangle into thirds to form a wrapped bag shape. Use a strand of black yarn to secure the bag shape in place - make the stitch resemble a catch or button on the front flap of the bag, then stitch bag in place on his right side on the belt.
He also has two yellow stripes on his belt - I just sewed those on using a needle and some yellow yarn - see pic.

Compass/Belt Badge;
Using a single strand of grey (I used a scrap I had handy) and 3.5mm hook;
(Make 2)
Work 6sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea sc around. (12sts)
Rnd 2: (1sc in first sc, 2sc in next sc) around, finish off. (18sts)
Sew in ends of both grey pieces, then place them wrong sides together and sc around the outer edge, joining both circles together as you go, finish off.
I used embroidery floss to work the ‘pointer’ on the compass - a diamond shape…bottom half of the diamond is white, top half is red.
I used a 1.5mm hook with the embroidery thread, worked 5ch, 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, then 1 sc in the next st, 1hdc, 1dc, finish off - make 1 in red and one in white……sew onto compass as per picture.

Hat
Using 2 strands of med blue and 5.5mm hook;

Work 6sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea st around. (12)
Rnd 2: (1sc in first sc, 2sc in next sc) around. (18)
Rnd 3: (1sc in first sc, 2sc in next sc) around. (24)
Rnd 4: sc around. (24)
Rnd 5: working in the front loops only (1sc in each of next 2sc, 2sc in next sc) around. (36)
Rnd 6: working in the front loops only (1sc in each of next 7sc, next 2sctog) around. (32)
Rnds 7-8: working in both loops - sc in ea st around.
Slip stitch into ea of the next 3sc, 1sc in ea of next 2sc, 1hdc in next 1sc, 1dc in ea of next 7sc, 1hdc in next sc, 1sc in ea of next 2sc, slip stitch into the next sc, ch1, turn. Work 2sc, 1hdc, 7dc, 1hdc, 2sc, sl st to finish off.
If you wish, you can work 1 round of reverse single crochet to finish off your brim using a single strand of med blue yarn and 3.5mm hook.
Hat peak - Turn hat so that it is upside down in your hands. In line with the curve that you have made for the top part of the hat, work in the back loops from rnd 6, using a single strand of yarn and a 3.5mm hook, attach yarn and working one stitch in ea sc, work 2sc, 1 hdc, 7dc, 1hdc, 2sc, finish off. Sew hat to head - add a little stuffing to the crown if you wish.

Hat badge;
Using royal blue and 3.5mm hook;
Work 6sc in a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 2sc in ea st around. (12)
Rnd 2: (1sc in first sc, 2sc in next sc) around, finish off. (18) Sew to front of hat.
Using white yarn, sew a row of chain st around edge of circle, then oversew the chains to form a solid line of stitching.
Use white embroidery thread and 1.5mm hook - work 6sc in a magic ring and then finish off to make the octopus body. Sew the white circle to the hat badge and then stitch 4 legs. I then used some black to sew two tiny eyes - French knots will do.
Using your royal blue, work 2 rows of stitching around the hat brim - see pic.
