Details of squares made in this blanket and links to relevant sources are on my Groovyghan for Annabel and Groovyghan for Susie2 Project Pages.
All stitches are US terms**
Making this Groovyghan for my younger Sister Ann and her husband Ben for their 30th wedding anniversary this time. They will use it in their campervan initially.
They have chosen blues, aqua’s and turquoise shades. It will certainly look different to the other Groovyghans I have made.
Started off with a trial run of colours to be used. I made 4 squares and showed them to my sister and she changed one colour in each square, so back to the drawing board. As the unwanted colours were at the beginning of each square, I decided not to frog them, so they will be sent to Sibol and I will start again!
I have completed the daisy squares, details of which are on my Groovyghan forSusies project page.
Onto the flower squares next and I have decided to make the same flowers squares as in Annabels Groovyghan, as they are not too bulky.
I am going to brave it and show my sister the squares today. I hope she likes the colour combinations. I know she wasn’t too keen on the yellow, but I persuaded her to keep it in, as the squares would be very boring without it. Good news, she likes the colours, thank goodness.
Onto the granny squares now, these are the boring ones, hopefully they won’t take too long.
Finished the grannies and now to decide whether to keep with the bobble strips or be daring and perhaps do a ripple. Thinking about it.
I decided to go with at least one strip of bobbles, technique is here and then review it again. I used 3.5mm hook for this strip to make it tighter.
I am going to brave a ripple strip as well and the technique I used was this:
I went along the squares with a sc in the colour of each square, (these are for my square, using d.k. and 9 squares -making 5 sqs 24 sc and 4 sqs 23 st
(9 squares = 212 scs)
1st Row: RS facing (I used 3.50 hook, but will use 3.75 next time for D.K.)
tbc into first 2 stitches, dc into next 2 sts, hdc into next 2 sts, sc into next 4 sts, hdc into next 2sts, dc in next 2 sts, trc into next 2 stitches all along, finishing with 1 trc into last 2 sts finish off yarn. This row makes the mountains and valleys.
Ripple: Rejoin yarn to beginning of row on the right side.
Ch 3, 1 dc into first st, dc into next 4 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc into next 4 sts, 2 dctog into next 2 sts, dc into next 4 sts to end and finish with dc into next 4 sts, 2dc into last st.
Obviously when you get to the desired length, you will have to reverse the mountains and valleys row to get an even row to join to the blanket**
It seems to work!
I’ve completed the squares and stips now and I think I will add the little quarter size squares to the outer edges, just to give is a little more width, as this blanket is made with double knit wool instead of the aran weight, it is smaller.
I don’t know what type of border I will give this blanket yet, I will have to do my research to see which one takes my eye.
I have decided to go with the same border as Annabels Groovyghan, which is 3 rows of shell all around and then one row of 3dc, ch 2, 3dc and 1sc alternating all around.
