I started this sweater several years ago but have had a hard time getting it going again since it is an emotional piece to knit.
This isn’t a particularly exciting Dale of Norway pattern (not found in Ravelry either even tho it is a Mette Handberg design) but I dedicated it to First Lieutenant Roslyn Littmann Schulte, who was killed in action in 2009 in Afghanistan. Her story and service to our country is extraordinary to recognize and read about since she was so accomplished at such a young age.
She was also a dear friend and classmate of my daughter’s from 3rd grade thru high school. Kate and ‘Roz’ always celebrated their birthdays together since they were one day apart. We are also long time friends of her parents, so it particularly hard this time of year when the anniversary of her death is so near and also a time when our daughter is about to experience the new joy of her first baby.
I finally got going on this sweater again since the emotions are a bit less raw and yet still very significant to us all. I will gift it to my daughter, Kate, to wear in honor of Roz. Although the design has been a bit of a snooze for me, the significance of the dedication is not.
It may be hard to read the knitted writing on the hem facing but it reads: First Lt. Roslyn Littmann Schulte, March 18, 1984 - May 20, 2009. (A portion of Wiki has her birth date in correct but is later cited as the correct date.)
I’m using Rauma 3 ply Strikke-garn instead of Heilo and trying to knit at a smaller gauge to make the sweater smaller.
