I used single crochet for all the squares. I started the first row with 8 sc and each corner is sc, ch2, sc BUT for rows 7 and 11 which is 2sc, ch2, 2sc in order to ensure a flat square.

I edged the blanket in two rows of hdc and then followed with the bobble edging by Heidi Bears.
