Use double strand of yarn.
For ribbed band: Leave long tail for sewing, ch 15, * turn, ch1, scbl (sc in back loop only) across * . Rep * to * until piece measures 18 3/4 to 19 inches (108 rows; 54 ribs). Use tail to sew band ends together.
For hat body, Rnd 1: Continue in the round working on band row edges, hdc in the loop between the ridges (doesn’t create a gap), ss join to top of first st (54 sts). For the next 16 rnds do any stitch combo desired. Start each rnd with a ch1 (doesn’t count as a st), do a rnd of dc-height sts, alternate with a rnd of hdc-height sts, and end each rnd with a ss join to top of first st. Rnd 18: Rep rnd 2. Hat body should measure 7 inches from edge of band. Rnd 19: (dc-height) decrease around (27 sts). Rnd 20: (hdc-height) regular around. Rnd 21: decrease around (13 or 14 sts). Rnd 22: regular around. Rnd 23: decrease around (6 or 7 sts). Cut yarn leaving a tail. Use tail to sew through back loop only of remaining sts; draw hole closed. Weave in ends.
