INSTRUCTIONS

Make magic circle. 6sc in circle, place unique-colored marker on last st. Close circle. (6)

Working in the round, 2sc in each st around; do not join to first st. (12)
-
Sc in next st, 2sc in next st, place marker x5, sc in next st, 2sc in next st. (18) (Since increased sts are marked, there is no need to count. Just sc around and 2sc in each marked st until piece measures 6 to 6.25 inches across widest part.)
-
Sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (24)
-
Sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (30)
-
Sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (36)
-
Sc in next 5 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (42)
-
Sc in next 6 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (48)
-
Sc in next 7 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (54)
-
Sc in next 8 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (60)
-
Sc in next 9 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (66)
-
Sc in next 10 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (72)
-
Sc in next 11 sts, 2sc in next st x6 (78) If piece is not yet 6 to 6.26 inches, continue increasing as above.
-
Remove markers except at end of row. Sc in each st around until yarn is about to change color anywhere along the row. Do 1 full row of “Rook” pattern: Sc in next st, dc into space 2 rows below next st around. Continue sc around until next color change, then repeat “Rook” row. Continue until piece measures 9 inches from center of top of hat to outer edge.
-
Invisible Finish: Complete last st at end of row. Cut 6-inch tail and pull up through last st. Thread tail onto yarn needle. Into 2nd st further along row, sew downward through both loops. Again in last st, sew downward between loops toward inside of work and weave in tail.
