UPPER HOOD, SHAPING: Begin side 1 at top back of head. Ch amount needed for 8 1/2- to 9-inch width (mine was 33). Ch 1, turn, and work rows of sctl downward, increasing at back edge and maintaining straight front edge. This will shape a curved corner rather than a right-angled point. Continue rows until piece is 9 1/2 to 10 inches wide and about 2 to 2 1/2 inches long (mine was 5 rows and 37 sts). Do an additional row to end side 1 at back edge, and continue beyond edge to create side 2: ch same number of sts as last row of side 1 (mine was 37). Work side 2 upward in a mirror image of side 1, the same number of rows and stitch-counts as in side 1, decreasing rather than increasing at back edge, ending at top back of head. Fasten off.
LOWER HOOD: Join yarn at the front edge of side 2. Sctl in even rows, as many rows as needed, until piece measures 7 1/2 to 8 inches from top.
SCARF: Sctl evenly to halfway across hood. Turn back and sctl only that half, until scarf measures 33 inches from top of hood; fasten off. Join yarn to hood and do second half of scarf as first half; fasten off.
FINISHING: Sew top of hood. Join yarn to piece at neck split, sc around perimeter of piece. Fasten off and weave in ends.
