Since I am using thicker yarn ( left over from a baby blanket ) and bigger needles, I am reducing the number of stitches between the chevron sections. I am going down in needle size to further shrink it down, approximately to a size Newborn to 3 months.
Looking at the chart of head circumference by age, I only want about 2” less. (6 months 17.75“; 1 month 15“).
I will also knit less height.
CO 85 on #5, change to #6 after five rounds of garter stitch.
Here is a good chart on the circumference of the head:

Only after I had already started and was well into the stripes, did I double-check for helpful notes with the keyword “newborn “ and came across some very helpful projects. I guess I had not needed to “reinvent the wheel” so to speak , but it’s nice to know that I am able to come up with it by myself, too.

Finished today and my sister in law who is married to a Norwegian, answered my question what exactly makes this cap so typically, traditionally Norwegian. Here is what she says: “I’m in Norway at the moment and it’s a traditional hat that norwegian skaters used to wearx”
For the straps I knitted two I-cords, each about 8” long.
