Notes

Loved my first sun hat, so I decided to make a second one, this time in the recommended yarn. I made a smaller brim on this one.

PROJECT LOG:
8AUG2020 - Completed the top and have started the bucket section. I did not do the last increase round (#14), because the flat top was too wide. I will very slowly work in 3-4 of the missing 6 increases in the bucket section and will pick up the remaining on the Catch Up round just before the brim. - I staggered the increases on the top in order to avoid a hexagonal effect, but will stack the increases on the brim.

The Rewind yarn is stiffer than the Estiva I used on the first hat. I’m still using an 5.0 mm hook, so I am needing to take more breaks than I usually do and may need to make other small modifications for a good fit on my head.

9AUG 2020 - Finished through the bucket section and have worked the first few rounds of brim. May frog back to add another round to the bucket section.

11AUG2020 - Done, except for the band. I added the extra round in the bucket section, as noted 2 days ago. I only did 9 rounds of the brim before the wire round, for a smaller hat. As I result, I used just shy of one skein of yarn. Need to decide what kind of band to do this time. Probably, not the same braid as last time.

I used 16 gauge “soft” brass wire in the brim. (See last photo) When I was almost done crocheting over the wire, I used jewelry tools to twist the two overlapping ends together. I then wrapped these ends with electrical tape and finished crocheting over the wire. This wire is softer than the wire rope called for in the pattern, but I think it works well. It might be interesting to try millinery wire.

12AUG2020 - Have decided for the moment to use an extra black band from another hat, which came with 3 interchangeable bands.

COMPARE & CONTRAST:
I have now made two hats, one out of the Rewind yarn and one out of the Estiva yarn. The Rewind yarn is slightly thicker & firmer and gives the hat more body. The Estiva yarn is softer & easier on the hands and more breathable. I like both yarns for this hat, but if I were to make a third hat, I would probably go with the Rewind.

Update: I’ve ordered more of the Rewind in two colors. More hats in my future! .. Link to my next hat..

Love both of the sunhats that I have made. Getting lots of use out of them and many compliments (even at a social distance).
