Notes

The photo with the tandem bike was taken during the yarn trip. This past weekend, on my birthday, we took a long distance bike ride to buy enough yarn to make the first one of these Guernsey sweaters that two of my three boys have been asking for. It was the only shop in the state that carried the yarn. There’s eight skeins in that rear bike bag!

Cast On 204 st to follow second size in pattern.
Making sweater length 2” longer.
Long Tail Tubular Cast On and joined in round.

Provisional Tubular cast on method helps keep it from twisting for the join:

1x1 ribbing for 3”
Began armhole shaping at 19” from cast-on: bound off 6 stitches at the sides and cast-on 7 stitches w purl st at ends so cut edges will fold under more easily.

Sloped bindoffs at shoulders to avoid stair stepped edges.

Purl side decreases at neck so they slant right or left as seen from the front/knit side

At 20” from hem I began arrow pattern on same row I bound off 4 st for button placket opening and cast on 7 stitches on next row for steek area.

At 25” from hem I began shaping front neck opening.

Crochet steek at armholes and button Placket

Used modified Three Needle Bindoff which makes a flatter seam then the traditional yet still benefits in the added structure.

1x1 ribbing around neck then picked up and knit ribbing along button placket and front edges of neck band. Used Tubular Bind Off

Notes of I-cord CastOn:
I-cord CastOn results in elongated stitches in the first row.
1)So, after a couple hours experimenting, I’ve come to the conclusion that the “i-cord cast on” does not work as nicely as knitting i-cord and picking up stitches. So that’s what I’ll do. Just did a small sample doing it this way and it’s pretty close to perfect (with another bit of practice it will be just right -- it’s too late for me to continue tonight). Thank you all for your input! I also got input from a friend who studied with EZ and has been knitting his entire 60+ years and he came to the same conclusion that two other methods leave elongated stitches, and picking up in the i cord does not.
2)Do Provisional CastOn, later go back and do I-cord Bindoff.
3) Try working in the wrong side and knit sts tbl. Including the last 2 k2tog tbl. It’ll get better
