Using Stroll yarns held triple, starting with three Sock Lab colorways plus a plain light grey, then the main color is the mustard tweed.
I added a few short rows to the ribbed bottoms, to make the back scoop down a wee bit, and the front scoop up.
Oops, I ran out of my main yarn color! So I added more short row wedges around the top, trying to match the look of the bottom. I winged it, and now seeing it done, I’m wishing I’d made some different decisions and planned ahead more… but I think it works well enough.
I ran into a lot of issues in this pattern; I kept track of them to pass them along to the designer so hopefully the pattern will be updated soon.
Okay my notes have all been shared with the designer, but it will take some time for the pattern to be looked at/edited, so I will share them here for knitters:
As the pattern is written, Section 2…
Row 3: Purl to the w&t, pick up the wrap and work it together with its st, p 3(3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5) , w&t.
Repeat Rows 2-3 twice more.
Row 4 (RS): Knit to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Row 5 (WS): Purl.
Repeat Rows 4-5 once, then work Row 4 once more.
…does not work, because there is no w&t on the needle after Row 3 to work to on Row 4. Here’s what I think it should be, after the final Row 3 repeat, basically flipping the RS/WS instructions:
Row 4 (RS): Knit to end.
Row 5 (WS): Purl to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Same instructions to Repeat Rows 4-5 once, then work Row 4 once more.
BUT I didn’t want my Row 5 wrap to be stacked directly over the wrap from the last Row 3 repeat, so I staggered it over a couple by working the first Row 5 for 2 extra sts, then the rest of the repeats as written.
Extra note:
After “Repeat Rows 4-5 once, then work Row 4 once more.” is:
Next row (WS): Purl to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Next row (RS): K 8(12, 12 15, 15, 15, 18, 18, 18) , w&t.
That next WS row being identical to Row 5; so, if I were editing the pattern, it would actually change to “Repeat Rows 4-5 TWICE” and then that first Next WS row would be removed.
Ran into another major pattern error in Section 5. I worked the six repeats of Rows 2-3, which left me with 25 stitches purled before the W&T on the final Row 3 repeat.
So then when I worked Row 4 (knit to 16 stitches before end of row), that was only 9 stitches knit. Which makes it impossible to continue on with Rows 6-8, as Row 5 has only 4 stitches worked. I cannot work to 5 stitches before the W&T when there are only 4 stitches between wraps.
So here’s what I ended up doing (these numbers are specific to the size I’m making, of course):
Row 4 (RS): Work to 6 sts before the end of the row (instead of 16), w&t.
Row 5 (WS): Purl to 4 sts before the w&t (instead of 5), w&t.
Row 6: Knit to 4 sts before the w&t (instead of 5), w&t.
Row 7: Purl to 4 sts before the w&t (instead of 5), w&t.
Row 8: Knit to 4 sts before the w&t (instead of 5), w&t.
(Rows 7-8 are rows 5-6 repeated once more.)
This makes 3 stitches knit on Row 8.
Then on Row 9 I purled 48, which was 1 st after the first w&t of this section.
The end of Section 7 is weird:
A) The last row touches Section 6, which I don’t think should happen (according to how it looks in the photos, and because if those two sections touch, then what’s the point of breaking the yarn and starting from the other end?) This is for me, other sizes might not have this issue.
B) The section ends directly after a W&T, so you’d need to slip stitches to the end in order to start the next section.
So, I think the best thing would be to skip the final row of that section; change “repeat the last 2 rows twice more” to once more, and then a final purl row at the end.
Since I’d already worked the final row, instead of tinking back, I just stopped 3 stitches early, so the sections don’t touch, then purled back to the end, so I have one extra row in the section according to the pattern, two extra rows according to what I think the section should probably be.
Because of all those changes I made to fix things throughout the section, I ended up with one side being a few rows longer than the other side when I finished the Back, so I did a couple of extra short rows to even it out, and make it as close as possible to a smooth rectangle shape.
Now onto the Front. It seems that (at least some of) the errors are mirrored here, so I’ll make the same adjustments…
Section 2:
Row 2 (WS): Purl
Row 3: Knit to the w&t, pick up the wrap and work it together with its st, k 3(3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5) , w&t.
Repeat Rows 2-3 twice more.
Row 4 (WS): Purl to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t. -> CHANGE TO: Purl to end.
Row 5 (RS): Knit. -> CHANGE TO: Knit to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Repeat Rows 4-5 twice more.
But then what happens after is different from the back side, so after those two repeats, I switched the RS/WSs like this:
Next row (WS): Purl 8(12, 12, 15, 15, 15, 18, 18, 18) , w&t.
Next row (RS): K to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
-- REMOVE THIS ROW: Next row: Purl to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Next row (WS NOW): Purl to end, picking up the wrap and working it together with its st. Break C2.
Section 5 has the exact same issue as on the back, so I handled it exactly the same way but mirrored of course (changed “16” to “6” and “5” to “4” in the subsequent rows).
Note about Section 7 for both sides:
“ … before the end of the row, w&t.
Repeat Rows 3-4 three times more.”
I assumed on subsequent reps that meant before w&t not before end of row.
And one thing in the sleeves Short Row Section 1:
Row 3: Knit to 4(4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts before the w&t, w&t.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat Rows 3-4 four times more.
For my size, the final (fourth) repeat here would have been “K1, w&t” (and then, I was slipping the first stitch of every row for a clean edge so it actually would have been “Sl1, w&t”), so I just skipped this final repeat.
But then, because of this skipped row, my sleeve bottoms were asymmetrical when I finished the short row sections, so I worked one extra RS/WS short row before beginning the post-short row normal sleeves.
Finally, there’s an error at the end of the raglan shaping, in the short rows section when you’re working the shaping on the wrong side. The purl-wise decreases are flipped.
“… ssp, p1, sm, p1, p2tog…” -- ssp and p2tog are switched. In order to decrease in the established direction, work the p2tog before the marker, the ssp after the marker.
