Pete wanted a warm hat with a bill, to keep rain off his glasses - I didn’t want to design a hat with a bill, so I found this pattern and it worked perfectly!

I made the braid detail with a contrasting yarn, for a little extra interest. And I made the hat a bit taller, so it could cover his ears. I think I followed the pattern as it was written besides that and the other color changes (though I might be forgetting something, since I made this hat a year ago and forgot to put it up on rav until now, oops!).

Picked out this yarn for Pete in York on our UK trip, but the one skein of black wasn’t enough for this hat; luckily I also bought a couple more skeins in other colors for myself, so I made his hat multi-colored. The yarn is supposed to be DK, but I think it acts like a worsted - the hat size turned out fine, and the gauge doesn’t seem too loose or anything.
