Ever since I decided to crochet a Christmas ornaments collection, a gingerbread man with a chef hat on is a must for me. In order to match the ball-shaped head theme with my other projects, once again, I improvised as a brave beginner.
Here are the steps of how I completed my Chef G. I used regular cheap acrylic yarns in brown and white for the most parts. A little bit of baby blue, blue and red, but these three are changeable. I used only single crochet (sc), and didn’t join for a smoother look.
Head-Brown & White (a basic ball shape)
Start with brown yarn
R1 6 (magic ring with 6 sc)
R2 12 (2 sc in each st)
R3 18 (2 sc in 1st st and sc in next st, repeat 6 times)
R4 24 (2 sc in 1st st and sc in next 2 st, repeat)
R5 30 (2 sc in 1st st and sc in next 3 st, repeat)
R6 36 (2 sc in 1st st and sc in next 4 st, repeat)
Change to white yarn
R7 36 (sc in each st)
Change to brown yarn again
R8-13 36 (sc in each st)

R18 6 (sc2tog in each st)

Note Don’t worry about the gap of the white circle, because we can easily cover it up with the hat!

To finish off, add the eyes, form the eyebrows and mouth by chaining scraps of blue and red yarns (or whatever materials at hand) and then sew them on. I arched the eyebrows of my grumpy chef G on purpose, so he will be yelling “Stop eating those cookies! They are for Christmas!” by my cookie jar.
