This pattern swells and rocks just like the ocean on a rocky shore. There are only enough specialty stitches in each section to get a taste of each type of specialty stitch, so please don’t let them intimidate you!

During the Great Irish Potato Famine spanned nearly a decade and millions of citizens either starved to death or emigrated. It’s estimated that Ireland’s population dropped by nearly 25% by the end. Part of the crisis was due to a potato blight which ravaged crops throughout Europe. The other contributing factor was that the remaining crops we...

Starstruck is an outside-in pattern with a set stitch count perfect for adding the Canada Goose Border. Being an outside-in enthusiast I work up every pattern I can get my hands on. They always begin with “Make a large number of chains then stitch back into them.” I’ve figured out how to make the first round with only three chains!!! I’ve also...

Two different patterns make the same block! Double your fun by choosing whether to work the block in the traditional way, or be bold and stitch from the outside-in.

In 2016 I’m hosting a Designer’s Challenge Test-along. Each month I’ll post a less commonly used stitch/technique. The challenge to two part-- everyone shares projects they’ve made with that stitch/technique, and I design a pattern using it as well. The remainder of the month is spent testing the pattern. At the end of the month it will be conv...

A Ravelry user posted a pattern request for an afghan block she’d made over 15 years before. After searching high and low I was unable to find the original and so wrote up this version based upon photos. If you recognize the pattern, please tell me. I’ll take this one down and link back to the original.

Do you love puzzles? This 6in pattern is presented as a series of puzzles. Each round is a different type of puzzle: rebus, word jumble, cryptogram, hidden message, word search, and crossword. A traditional version of the pattern is available on the last page, complete with example photo.

This pattern is inspired by a photo request posted online. The poster wanted to recreate an afghan made by her late grandmother-in-law Lenore. No one was able to help find the original pattern used, so this is my interpretation of the close-up photo posted. If you recognize the pattern, please let me know so I can give proper credit.

Note: Pattern has been revised, the round-by-round photos won’t match exactly, but should still be helpful.

My husband noticed that when I’m making blocks I measure, a lot. He asked if it wouldn’t be easier to start from the outside and work in, then you’d always know it was going to be exactly 12in.
