This isn’t exactly a pattern, more of a tutorial for the feather and fan stitch made in Tunisian crochet. After an explanation of the amount of stitches needed there are instructions for a sample which can be made into a scarf.

Beginning with the lower edge rib to the back, the main part of this pattern is worked using mitred squares. Each mitred square is worked separately, entrelac style, not breaking off the yarn at the end of each square. The squares are worked in diagonal rows by picking up the stitches from the previously worked squares and/or rib.

This time starting with a circle and ending with a square, I have called this Urchin Shell because the centre reminds me of an old urchin shell my mother used to have as an ornament.

(I used a hook with an extension cable, but it is possible, with a bit of a squeeze, to fit all the stitches onto a regular Tunisian crochet hook). I have been admiring the turquoise colourway of James C. Brett’s Woodlander double knitting yarn in my local wool shop for some time! Eventually my will weakened and I bought all the 8 balls in stock, took them home and squirrelled them away in my yarn stash until an idea popped into my head.
