This knits up rather quickly. I don’t think the gauge is important, I can’t tell you what it is. I used one skein of “I Love This Yarn!” Neon Purple to knit a hat and this cowl. Here’s a link to the hat I knit to match by Halldora J

This is a great pattern for left over yarn and is a quick knit. It was inspired by Kristen Ashbaugh-Helmreich’s “Ruby Red Heart Hat” which is a free download here on Ravelry. Check it out, it’s an awesome hat. After making one in this great purple yarn I didn’t want the left over to go to waste but didn’t have enough to make fingerless gloves.

These slippers are knit holding two strands of yarn together. You could use one bulky yarn instead, be sure to check the gauge. These are knit in the round to minimize seaming. The bind off shown is kitchener stitch which can be intimidating but it’s worth it to hide the toe seam. Here’s a great video with instructions on kitchener bind off.
