Knitting: Mittens
I decided that my Athabasca Shawl needed some matching mittens using my leftover yarn. This is my basic mitten pattern with the added feature of the lace repeat found in the Athabasca Shawl.

The Athabasca River flows from its source in the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park to the Athabasca Lake on the northern boarder of Alberta and Saskatchewan. People have hunted, fished and lived along its banks for thousands of years. We enjoy its beauty and respect the force of nature that it is, especially come the spring ice break.

I grew up on the west coast of Newfoundland. My family spent many Sunday afternoons exploring the Humber Valley and Gros Morne National Park. The west coast of the island is a beautiful vista of hills, valleys, and rivers. Hills and Valley was the name of my parents’ company and seemed a fitting name for this design inspired by home.
Knitting: Cowl
My daughter requested this cowl over lap this way to form a pocket for her phone or lunch money. Knit with just one skein of fingering weight yarn this all over cable texture is very eye catching.

The Labrador Shawl incorporates the elements of traditional Newfoundland and Labrador mittens and trigger mittens into a shawl. The colourwork is often referred to a the Labrador diamond. There are many variations of this colourwork but this is one that I fondly remember my grandmothers knitting.
