This is a basic slouch design in sport weight. In addition, I’ve included some notes on how to make that slouch successfully slouch. A great pattern to practice knitting in the round and a flattering design for men, women, or difficult-to-please teenagers.

I made this toque for mother-in-law (hence the name), but it is a unisex design that looks good on just about anyone. It uses a simple repeated pattern and is best done in a soft, lofty worsted merino like Malabrigo Rios or Manos del Uruguay Gloria (probably two of the softest yarns you’ll ever use).

I knitted this example using Estelle Yarns Alpaca Merino Chunky. With this being a stranded pattern, this makes for a very warm hat. The original pattern is a snug adult medium. For an adult large, use the instructions in brackets (noting that there is a slight variation in the patterns).
