Knitting: Cowl
This long cowl can be worn around your neck, or pulled up over your head AND it still covers the back of your neck to keep you toasty warm. The pattern is written for either DK or Worsted Weight yarn.
Knitting: Headband
We love the shapes of the Moon Phases and what better palette than a headband. The double layer makes it nice and warm and covers up all the stranding on the backside.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Hidden Valley is the name of the cross country ski trail system on the edge of Ely, Minnesota where our store is located. We knit this hat and it turned out to be the perfect hat for skiing in. If you are new to intarsia, this is a perfect project to learn the basics.
Crochet: Washcloth / Dishcloth
We can’t resist the Hudson Bay Colors so put them on this easy single crochet baby blanket.
Crochet: Washcloth / Dishcloth
This dishcloth is worked in single crochet.
Crochet: Washcloth / Dishcloth
This is a great beginner crochet project. It’s single crochet, switching colors to get the rainbow. Stripes seem to make any project go a little faster.
Knitting: Mittens
We knit these mittens with a fingering weight self striping yarn which we normally use for socks. We realized if you tuck your thumbs under, it looks like you have socks on your hands.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Wild Blueberries are one of our favorite summer things. We couldn’t resist designing a hat with blueberries on it.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Blueberries and bears are two of our favorite things in the Northwoods. We decided to put them on a pair of fingerless mitts and it worked.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
We have blueberries and bears. It made sense to put them both on one hat.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
When Diane gets her hands on some good fingering weight yarn and starts to chart some colorwork, watch out, something amazing is about to happen. This is one of those things. A hidden secret in this hat is a ribbed section underneath the brim colorwork, so the hat hugs your head.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
The Voyageurs are a part of the history in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which is our backyard. Creating Hudson Bay themed patterns seems natural.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Another hat in our Voyageur/Hudson Bay series. Our shop is located in Ely, Minnesota which has the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in it’s back yard. A large part of the history of the area is the Voyageurs that transported goods for the Hudson Bay Company along it’s waterways. Sometimes, we crave a nice toque.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
We can’t resist the Hudson Bay Colors so put them on this traditional Voyageur Toque.
Knitting: Mittens
Sometimes we need a sturdy work mitten in the Winter. A Mitten that is both warm and durable. The men’s version fits the bill. For the Women’s version we used a lighter weight, softer yarn that feels great on the hand.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
The colors of Fall in Minnesota are always a design inspiration.
Knitting: Mittens
There is something about this leaf pattern that we love. Putting it on a mitten makes it sing!
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Our friend Kris designed this hat for our Winter Knitting Retreat back in 1998. We redesigned it in 2022, adding a little more detail so the colorwork stranding was a little easier. We love this hat and since our home town of Ely, Minnesota hosts the International Wolf Center, it seems appropriate that we have a Wolf Hat.
Knitting: Pullover
We love a DK weight sweater AND we love ‘cheating’ on our colorwork and using a yarn that changes color instead of having to do it ‘manually’. A great sweater for any season and any gender.
Knitting: Pullover
We wanted to design a simple colorwork, neck down sweater and we did it. We like the muted rainbow colors so went for that theme. The name comes from the ridge of Mountains along the Northeast Shore of Lake Superior. They aren’t really mountains anymore, but before the glaciers they were higher than the Himalayas. The bottom edge of the colorwo...
Knitting: Washcloth / Dishcloth
This dishcloth is double knit. You actually knit two layers at once. What better way to practice than on a checkerboard.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
These are a basic Fingerless Mitt with a gusset that adds a nice subtle design detail.
Knitting: Mittens
A woman brought a pair of these mittens into the shop and said her neighbor knit them for her when she was a child. She had never worn them and gave them to us. We reverse engineered them, wrote the pattern and made them into a kit.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
The swooping lines on this shawl remind of us water, which we have a lot of in Ely, Minnesota where our shop is located. It’s a great size to be worn as a large scarf or wrapped around you on a chilly day.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
We love fun, colorful hats and this one turned out great. All you do is knit two stitches with a plain color and two stitches with a variegated and WaLa you have a fun hat.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This hat is actually two hats in one. You provisionally cast on, knit one hat, pick up your live stitches and knit a second hat.
Knitting: Pullover
We love a good poncho. Add sleeves if you want and make it a swoncho. Either way it’s like wearing a hug.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This hat was very popular a few years ago. The Pistil Hat Company started the trend. The knitting world, including us, got on the bandwagon.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This hat was knit for a good guy, and it is also good hat for a guy or any gender. It look good on any head. The double layer on the ears makes it nice and warm. We also took a worsted weight yarn and knit it tight for warmth.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Sometimes I’m in the mood to knit something really simple. This is one of those things.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
We use these hats for new knitters and when we need an easy hat pattern. I also like to use them for charity knitting. Three varieties, all very simple.
Knitting: Pullover
We designed this years ago and have knitted it out of several different yarns. It always looks good and feels like a sweater you want to put on every day.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This hat was designed many, many years ago and is a shop favorite. We like the look of Latvian Braid to start a hat. The Moose is iconic in Northern Minnesota where our shop is located, so a Moose hat was a must.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This is the first hat I (Anna) designed back in 1996. It has stood the test of time and remains a favorite in the shop. Our favorite way to knit it is to use one multicolored yarn and one solid. It really accentuates the striping.
