Knitting: Cardigan, Beanie, Toque
These are wonderful introductions to fair isle: the yarn is not too thin, the pieces not too big, the two-colour portion limited and simple. These pieces are as subtle or bold as the knitter chooses-- boys might look especially well in navy and white-- and very clean in silhouette. They are each in the drop shoulder style, and the sleeves have ...
Knitting: Coat / Jacket, Beanie, Toque, Baby Blanket
A st st blanket edged in moss stitch; hat, st st with a moss brim. So far, so simple. The jacket is likewise simple: A-line, with a st st body and sleeves and moss stitch edgings, pockets, and collar. But oh-- it’s the collar that makes it: Full, lightly folded over (in the picture the top two of the four buttons are hidden); full of fashion an...
Knitting: Cardigan
There is a choice of crew neck or v neck. The lace pattern is only 8 rows. And you have a choice of lacy or textured sleeves-- the textured ones have the garter ridge pattern. Shoulders are a pure drop so you don’t have to worry about shaping within the lace. The sleeve caps are rounded in the simplest and most gradual way, just by casting off ...
Knitting: Shrug / Bolero
Here we have choices that are almost too hard to make, based on the adorableness of the design. This bolero body shape can be a buttoned vest, short-sleeved cardi, or a cardi with full-length sleeves. (Clearly it’s best to make one of each and put the whole issue to bed.) The sides of the garments are all straight-- it’s a drop shoulder-- but t...
Knitting: Cardigan
This is a completely charming base piece with a number of variations. You may choose short or long sleeves (set-in, both with picot edgings); and a one-button close on the cardi, or a shoulder with two buttons for the sweater. The lace pattern is very easy and extends over only four rows. Stylish, easy, and lovely for the smallest babies.
Knitting: Cardigan, Coat / Jacket, Booties, Mittens, Bonnet
This suite shows a wonderful use of texture that absolutely any reasonable knitter could do easily-- and more than that, these pieces look marvellous in any style of yarn at all, and are perfectly appropriate for boys or girls (buttonhole instructions are given for both). Shoulders are drop, sleeve caps are flat. All are knit flat and seamed.
Knitting: Cardigan, Vest
Effortlessly classy, easy to knit, and wearable with anything-- these are well-nigh perfect pieces for any baby boy or girl on the planet. Set-in sleeves give a more tailored and refined look than a drop shoulder; less bulk at the shoulder and underarm will benefit tiny preemies, too, and provide extra comfort.
Knitting: Cardigan, Pullover
These very pretty pieces are wonderful for the knitter who has mastered the basics but wants to try a taste of lace. The sides are completely straight, so they’re drop-shouldered, but the sleeves have a rounded cap. The backs of each are plain st st-- couldn’t be easier. The lace pattern is only 4 rows, and two of those are just knitting the kn...
Knitting: Cardigan, Beanie, Toque, Baby Blanket
Because of the simplicity of the stitch patterning, this winning set will work beautifully with any style of DK you like: heathers, tweeds, variegates-- they’ll all be shown off perfectly. There’s no shaping to the lower body of the cardigan, so this could actually work for boy babies if you care to do that; though the emphasis on the Empire wa...
Knitting: Cardigan, Beanie, Toque
Often it can be tricky seaming lacy fabrics together, as you might find sewing raglan sleeves into a body. But this design makes the seaming easier by having the under part of the sleeves worked in st st-- and it works amazingly well as a design element, too. The front bands are flanked with mirrored cables, but the sleeve panels are lacy only....
Knitting: Cardigan, Vest
Surprising and very much out of the common way-- but these are really appealing little pieces that have ‘stashbuster’ written all over them. We love the use of colour and texture (the backs are the same pattern as the sleeves). Sleeves are set in with high caps. Wonderful for girls or boys.
Knitting: Cardigan, Earflap Hat
This is one of the purest, most classic little car-coat styles we’ve ever seen. Together with the little helmet and chin strap, it’s so endearingly poised that you want to laugh with a lump in your throat. As with most of the UKHKA designs, this would look terrific in just about any style of yarn. And happily, it’s one of those ensembles that w...
Knitting: Cardigan
Sometimes you want a beautiful, lacy effect for a little girl, but you are unsure of your skills. This pattern gives you the ability to make those garments with a minimum of effort, and maximum visual panache. The ruffly hem is easy: you just cast on a larger number of stitches and work two rows of strategic decreases. The ribbing, edged in gar...
Knitting: Cardigan, Pullover
For those knitters who really like to keep their fingers busy, and appreciate texture combinations, these super little cardies and sweaters are just perfect for boys or girls. Each is available with a crew or V neck, and features raglan sleeves. (Anyone who has ever had to un/dress a small person knows that raglans are the easiest to put on and...
Knitting: Coat / Jacket, Booties, Mittens, Beanie, Toque
When you’re working in 4 ply, you don’t necessarily want something faddy-- you want something that with lasting looks. If you’re knitting for babies, maybe you’re even thinking heirloom knitting. Well, here you go. This is a lovely little suite with a cabled-looking eyelet pattern, but it’s not cabled; the twisty look is just accomplished throu...
Knitting: Cardigan
These are very, very basic cardies, traditionally constructed in pieces, with the front garter bands knitted separately and sewn down on left and right fronts to meet at the back neck. The top two versions, with either a V or crew neck, would suit any kind of 4 ply at all (long-or-short-repeat variegate, tweed, nep, textured, whatever) wonderfu...
Knitting: Cardigan, Beanie, Toque, Baby Blanket
The eyelet trim on these pieces is only a matter of increasing one and knitting two together. And yet the finesse imparted to these pieces by that simple action is wonderful, and looks terrific in any style of yarn at all. Hat is knit flat and seamed.
Knitting: Coat / Jacket, Beanie, Toque
Here is a marvellous set that appears to be fashioned out of brocade-- but of course it’s only knit and purl stitches used to perfect effect. Armholes are indented once for a modified drop shoulder; sleeve caps are flat, so you really don’t have to worry about anything except getting the stitch patterning right. Bands (neatly delineated for boy...
Knitting: Cardigan
In which only a couple of small, clever details turn this design from a handsome unisex one to a very feminine piece. Both models sport dropped shoulders with flat sleeve caps (the better to work the trinity stitch). But on the frilled version, the shawl collar is shaped with unwrapped short rows-- wrap them if you like that better-- and finish...
Knitting: Pullover, Coat / Jacket
These invaluable pieces are cut nice and roomy (a good 2” larger than a standard sweater size), with big patch pockets to warm the hands. In the case of the hooded sweater, you are even given a kangaroo pocket, in which the child’s hands can hold themselves-- fun and even more warming. Armholes are indented once and sleeve tops are flat, for re...
Knitting: Cardigan, Scarf, Beanie, Toque
The fabric is entirely composed of 2/2 cabling on the RS to give a basketweave effect. Naturally, this is also very warm and toasty for the tot-- and the effects possible with different yarns are fantastic. There is no armhole shaping, but the sleeves do have a slight cap. Hat is knit flat and seamed.
Knitting: Cardigan, Scarf, Beanie, Toque
These darling cardies are knit in pieces up to the bottom yoke/garter/cable, and are then united on one needle and finished all at once (the shaping is more or less raglan). The pattern has you cast off the pieces and then pick stitches up from them, but you could leave the stitches live on holders and pick them up from there if you prefer. The...
Knitting: Cardigan, Vest
Was there ever such a call to play with colour! Here you need so special skills at all, just an interest in a well-dressed young one… and perhaps a stash of part-balls or oddments in various colours to help you out. The bodies of these pieces are A-line, bell-shaped, which of course is an advantage when the young person’s bottom might be larger...
Knitting: Cardigan, Beanie, Toque
A lot of simple patterns exist that make lovely, if light, DK garments for kids. This one, though, boasts both tenderness and heft. Using a half-brioche (or half-fisherman’s rib) stitch, where one row is knit and another is worked in a 1 x 1 rib with the knit stitches worked as K1B (Knit 1 Below), you get a thick, cushy, deep fabric that envelo...
