Alpacas are originally from Peru, which is still the largest producer of alpaca fiber today. They were bred from vicunas and domesticated specifically to be fiber animals. “Baby Alpaca” is a term for the the finest fiber – most of it is from the first or second shearing of a cria (a baby alpaca), but some adults produce such fine fleece that it is also classified as “baby.”

This yarn is produced by Garnstudio and sold by a small business local to me – Nordicmart.com. Nordicmart is run by a Swedish family who was crazy enough to pick up and move to the US a few years ago. They say the weather is nicer.
