Churro sheep were the original sheep brought to the New World by Columbus on his second voyage. The king of Spain would not allow the Merino sheep to be taken from the country, so Churros, with their coarser wool, were brought. It is this wool that was used for the prized handspun Navajo and Rio Grande blankets of the 19th century. Many wool growers are striving to bring back the breed, now officially named “Navajo-Churro.”

This wool is produced at a ranch near Taos and mill-spun into a nice singles yarn. It comes in 23 hand-dyed colors and 7 naturals.
