Field & Forage Yarn is an annual study in local colour. The ‘Field’ process starts in March, when we start traditional dye plants in the greenhouse. For eight months we tend our colour until it is ready for harvesting and drying for later dye use. The ‘Forage’ process occurs throughout the year as we gather invasive plant species and salvage locally available dye sources from unlikely places. Yarn is then hand-dyed in the skein to produce the year’s unique terroir of colour.

The collection is created in collaboration with fibre artist, Megan Samms, on a Mule Spinner 2-Ply 100% Wool Yarn.

Lofty woolen, mule-spun yarn

Expect subtle as well as not so subtle variegation within dye lots and individual skeins. We have attempted to pick much of the loose dyestuff from the yarn but you should also expect to find some within the skein. This can be picked out as you work with it. Please consider this as the makers mark of a completely naturally produced and dyed woollen product. When you are introducing a new skein of yarn, be sure to alternate rows with the old skein.

If you choose to use Field & Forage Yarn for colour work with a natural sheep shade Mule Spinner Yarn, we recommend that you wash the sheep shade yarn prior to knitting the two together - this will ensure that both yarns have bloomed equally for gauging.

There are approximately 198m or 217yd per 112 gm/4 oz skein. For hand knitting, we recommend 4 mm to 5 mm needles.

This is a Light to Medium weight yarn according to the Craft Yarn Council’s Yarn Standard.
