Un-Spun Solid
Gauge and needle information assume two strands worked together. 1-ply at approximately 2,200 yards per pound. Normal use usually calls for using two or three strands together.
From the company website: “What is Un-Spun™? In spinning mills Un-Spun™ is called pencil roving. In Iceland, it is called plotulopi, or lopi for short. It is the form yarn takes just before spinning. In Iceland, knitters began using pencil roving as a knitting “yarn” in the 19th century for their beautiful yoke sweaters. Un-Spun™ principal characteristic is that the fibers have not been spun, or twisted around themselves.
“Unlike the Icelandic product which tends to be a coarse wool, Fingerlakes’ Un-Spun™ is made of very soft, high crimp wool. This not only results in a super soft feel but because of the crimp you get superior strength with a lighter weight strand. This gives the knitter more options in using Un-Spun™.
“Un-Spun™ may be used for both hand and machine knitting and crocheting, weaving, and spinning. It can be used to build heavier ‘yarns’ by working with two, three, or more stands, and this can be done with the same color or by combining colors for a unique effect. It can even be used with spun yarn for a unique texture effect. Although not as strong as spun yarn, once you add your stitches you increase it’s strength as the fibers wrap around and lock onto other fibers, yet maintain a soft, lofty garment.”
