Virgin Wool
This is vintage Manos del Uruguay yarn, made from “virgin wool,” that was a precursor to the Manos Wool Clasica sold today. Came in several varying “yarn sizes,” which most likely meant slightly different weights and yardages. Please adjust your yardage and weight at the stash level, as weight and yardage are an estimate.

The Story of the Stria Yarn of Uruguay
It is said that this famous yarn now identified with the Cooperative Manos del Uruguay had its beginning about 1850. In the northeast area of Paysandú province where the Uruguay river flows, the sheep graze in meadows strewn with the round geods of agate stone. These stones when split open reveal intricate layers of soft colors which blend into each other. These stone formations so influenced the wife of a sheep farmer when she was dying the family yarns that she tried to duplicate the effect. After many years of almost alchemy she developed a successful formula. The Manos del Uruguay Cooperative now uses this method when they kettle dye their own hand spun wool yarns to give an effect of several tones of a color on a single strand of yarn.
